We think this would provide justice for victims of lies or intrusion by newspapers, and deliver a trustworthy and accountable press that the British people deserve. The press could help create new approved bodies if needed.
We feel a free press is vital but there must be an independent and cost-effective regulator to protect people who have suffered from incorrect reporting, allowing them access to a remedy. The Leveson report recommended creating a new independent press regulator. A Royal Charter created the Press Recognition Panel, whose role is to ensure that, among other things, approved regulators are independent of the publishers they regulate. We think this is a human rights issue.
