We urge the Government to revise guinea-pig quarantine from non-EU countries, reducing it from 4 months to 1 due to low rabies risk. We also request indoor facilities with proper hideaways to ensure their comfort and well-being, as current conditions can cause stress and health issues.
Guinea-pigs have a low rabies risk and typically succumb within a fairly short period if infected. We think this makes a one-month quarantine sufficient. They require a warm, quiet indoor setting with hide houses to reduce stress. In 2023, our two guinea pigs sadly passed during and shortly after a four-month quarantine upon entering London from New York. We feel that future arrivals deserve a more humane, tailored quarantine approach.
