The Advertising Standards Authority oversees all product advertising in the UK to prevent false or misleading information being included. We think this same level of scrutiny should be applied to political advertising. We think there needs to be independent regulation in this area.
We think the UK public deserve to be given accurate, reliable information to base their political decisions on. We think if something is presented to us as a fact that is misleading, this should be given the same independent review as a misleading product advertisement. Currently, we believe an advert for a can of baked beans deemed 'misleading' is dealt with more seriously than disinformation in political advertising in this country.
