Milestones

The British TV industry has faced a decline in recent years, leaving some freelancers jobless for long periods, unable to support their families, and exiting the industry.

The government could offer financial aid to freelancers during gaps, provide tax incentives for broadcasters to resume commissioning earlier, and invest in creative industries to create new opportunities. We think that legislation should prevent public sector broadcasters from halting commissions in ways that harm the workforce. Reforms ensuring fair contracts and protections for freelancers, alongside support for training and upskilling, could also help retain talent and revive the struggling TV industry.
