We believe this would reduce the risks posed by substance use during pregnancy and breastfeeding, which would protect both mothers and children. Alongside making it a specific offence with legal consequences, there should also be an offer of support and rehabilitation for those affected.
This proposal is aimed at protecting unborn children and infants from the harmful effects of substance use. While it aims to criminalise substance use during pregnancy and breastfeeding, it also prioritises the provision of support, education, and rehabilitation. We believe this balance would help ensure that mothers and children receive the help they need while holding individuals accountable for any health risks caused by substance use.
