We urge the government to stop the cuts to PIP and UC. We think they will disproportionately harm disabled people. We think they should ensure PIP rises with inflation and that disabled people on UC are not financially penalised for being unable to work, not make it harder to access vital support.

Many disabled people rely on PIP to afford essential costs like mobility aids, transport and care. We are concerned that making it harder to qualify could push disabled people into poverty. Similarly, we think that cutting UC top ups for those unfit to work while increasing the standard allowance for all could create an unfair system that punishes disability. The Disability Benefits Consortium has warned that these changes could leave thousands unable to meet basic living costs. A 2023 study by Scope showed that on average, disabled households (with at least one disabled adult or child) need an additional £975 a month to have the same standard of living as non-disabled households.
