We think steps should be taken to ensure animal safety alongside that of vulnerable children. We think legislation should require collaboration between social services and animal welfare organizations, especially if a home is found to be unsafe for children.

We think a qualified animal welfare officer should assess the situation for any domestic pets. The officer could then arrange for temporary fostering or rehoming if the living condition is considered unsuitable, which could prevent unnecessary suffering and tragic outcomes.
