Milestones—
We call on the government to introduce a student loan repayment forgiveness scheme for educators with 10+ years of service in public education. This could clear debt for those who trained before teacher apprenticeships, helping retain skilled teachers and ease financial burden in the sector.
We think this would recognise their commitment. We are concerned that rising living costs have meant that many leave the profession or rely on financial support. We believe that clearing this debt could help retain skilled teachers and ease financial pressure. Currently, new training teachers can go through an apprenticeship scheme. However those pre apprenticeship can pay hundreds back a month to SLC and may struggle with the cost of living.
