We think harsher laws on advertising gambling, particularly sports betting and online casinos/bingo, should be introduced to combat rising problem gambling, especially among young people. This should include limits on when/how much can be broadcast, as well as much stricter content laws.

Part of this government's manifesto was a commitment to "reducing gambling-related harm," which is crucial due to the current rise in addiction, shown by a 114% increase in under-18s problem gambling and 130% increase in NHS referrals to specialist clinics. We think this may be linked to the glamourising advertising of betting companies, featuring famous actors, football pundits, etc, promoting the harmful industry to huge audiences.
