Require MPs to report any planned personal financial transaction they wish to make over £20,000, including trustee decisions, to an independent parliamentary ethics adviser for review before execution, to prevent future scandals and restore trust in politics.
Scandals over ministers’ and MPs’ financial dealings keep undermining trust in politics. The cycle of headlines, denials and resignations wastes time and distracts from governing. The existing system (Independent Adviser on Ministerial Standards, Register of Interests etc.) only kicks in after the horse has bolted. An independent pre-clearance system would protect the public from conflicts of interest, protect honest MPs from damaging speculation, and stop scandals before they start.
