Stop unfair fines when drivers simply forget to pay tolls. Require toll enforcement to only charge the toll itself. Fines should only apply if reminders are ignored. Drivers shouldn’t face £25–£50 penalties for a £2 crossing just because they forgot.

Drivers are being fined £25–£50 for tolls costing just £2–£2.40, often because they forgot to pay online after using free-flow bridges. At the Mersey Gateway, around 20% of all money collected comes from fines, and at Dartford it’s around 40%. We think the system relies on forgetfulness to generate income. It’s right that people pay the toll, but honest mistakes shouldn’t be turned into excessive fines.
