We believe the NHS optical voucher scheme fails severely sight impaired (SSI) people. Lens upgrades (thinning/tints) cost £175-£300, draining funds that could be used for other disability costs. We want the maximum voucher for all SSI people to cover essential, clinically prescribed features fully.
We urge the Government to: 1) Fund the maximum NHS optical voucher (Band D or H equivalent) to any individual registered as Severely Sight Impaired (Blind). 2) Provide sufficient funding to ensure this maximum value fully covers all clinically prescribed lens thinning and specialist tints/filters.
