Biomedical science graduates cannot work as biomedical scientists in NHS without completing IBMS registration portfolio, which requires a competitive placement that not all can access.
Nurses and other HCPC professionals are eligible for registration automatically, but biomedical scientists are not. We ask the Government to work with IBMS, HCPC, and universities to ensure all biomedical science degrees include integrated registration portfolio training, so that graduates can enter the NHS directly. We believe this would create fairness across healthcare professions and remove unnecessary barriers for biomedical scientists, helping to address the shortage in pathology and diagnostics.
