Milestones

Women facing ovary removal deserve clear information about surgical menopause, guidance on HRT/ alternatives, and proper follow-up care. Surgical menopause must be recognised as distinct from natural menopause, with individualised support reflecting its sudden, severe impact of hormone deprivation.

Surgical menopause causes an abrupt loss of hormones that can trigger severe physical and psychological symptoms, yet women are rarely adequately informed or supported about the full impact it will have on their health and lives. One study showed that 95% of women leave hospital without HRT or follow-up care, increasing the risk of heart disease, osteoporosis, and depression. Surgical menopause must be treated as distinct from natural menopause, with informed, individualised care across the NHS.
