Milestones

Require all prison officers in public and private sector prisons to undergo mandatory training resulting in a profession specific qualification. Once qualified prison officers should be registered with a national body and provided with an individual prison officer number.

Prison officers work daily with some of the most vulnerable individuals in society, often facing complex mental health, safeguarding, and rehabilitation needs. As such, it is essential that their role is supported by a recognised framework of professional accountability.
