We call on the Government to set out a legal definition for the non-medical role Maternity Nurse, as the name for the role of caring for parents and babies, privately in the home.
The Government announced in May that they would make it a criminal offence for people who are not qualified as a nurse to use the title. We believe the Maternity Nurse name is a very traditional name, and agree it is non-medical. It refers to a person who supports a Nursing mother and baby. We work privately in the home. We think setting this out in law would let us continue the use of the name Maternity Nurse.
