Milestones—
Ensure all NHS pulse oximeters are independently tested and certified to be accurate for all skin tones. Update NHS procurement and clinical guidelines so only inclusive devices are used, with a full transition to validated models by the end of 2026.
It is well established that pulse oximeters can provide inaccurate readings for oxygen levels in people with darker skin, risking missed hypoxia and delayed care. We think continuing use of inaccurate devices undermines patient safety and NHS equality commitments. The government must act now to ensure all NHS oximeters are fair and inclusive by the end of 2026.
