We ask the Government to change the tax system so essential bills are paid before income tax is taken. People should cover unavoidable costs like mortgage or rent, council tax, gas, electricity and water first. This would reduce pressure on working households
We think taxing only the income left after essential bills would ease cost-of-living pressures, reduce debt and create a fairer system. We urge the Government to review income tax rules so basic living costs are deducted before tax is applied.
