Modernise the UK Novel Foods Regulation so traditional natural products with a history of safe global use can be sold without authorisation. The framework should reflect modern science, cultural diversity, consumer choice and fair access for small UK producers; not an arbitrary 1997 cut-off.
Increasing numbers of people in the UK are choosing natural and traditional approaches to support their health and wellbeing. Products such as medicinal mushrooms have been used safely for centuries in other parts of the world, yet are restricted here due to the 1997 benchmark. This limits consumer choice, harms small businesses and fails to reflect modern science or cultural practice.
