We want the Government to amend legislation and guidance so that the term "lifetime sex offender registration” is reviewed and changed to reflect the term’s real definition and prevent victims or members of the public from being misled by this terminology.
The term "lifetime" registration is widely understood by many to mean permanent registration for the remainder of an offenders’ life. In reality, individuals subject to lifetime notification requirements may apply to be removed after a qualifying period. We believe this mismatch risks misleading victims and the public, and undermining trust in the justice system.
