Milestones

We want the Government to increase capital highway funding for local authorities and ringfence a fixed percentage of revenue from the Fuel Duty Tax and Road Tax to meet the “steady state” maintenance requirement and allow for a permanent structural repair.

We believe the current funding model is failing. Motorist taxes make around £30 billion annually; the 2024 Autumn Budget allocated only around £1.6 billion for local highways. We feel this disparity has left parts of our road network in poor condition. Nottinghamshire County Council has inherited a backlog of around £391 million. To stop roads deteriorating further, we need higher government grants to ensure repairs do not fall short.
