We call on the UK Government to introduce legal and employment protections, as well as financial support, for individuals who are accused of serious crimes and are unable to work while investigations are ongoing. Those convicted would have to pay any support back.

Individuals who are falsely accused of serious crimes often face severe consequences despite not being convicted of any offence. While investigations are necessary, there are currently limited safeguards to protect the livelihoods and wellbeing of those who are later found to be innocent or where no charges are brought. The presumption of innocence is a fundamental principle of justice, yet we believe false accusations can effectively punish individuals without due process.
