I am calling on the Government to review and strengthen animal welfare laws for all farmed animals, including fish. I think current farming and fishing practices can cause unnecessary suffering. The UK should ensure higher welfare standards and humane treatment for all animals raised for food.
Scientific evidence shows that animals, including fish, can experience pain and stress. Yet some current practices can allow intensive confinement, stressful transport and inadequate stunning before slaughter. We feel that fish can be excluded from full welfare protections. The UK should lead in phasing out the most restrictive systems, improving humane standards, and supporting higher welfare and plant-based alternatives.
