We want the Government to review passport policy and require UK passports to record a holder’s ethnicity alongside nationality. Ethnicity is an important part of identity, ancestry and heritage, and we think including it in passports would better reflect the diverse backgrounds of British citizens.
UK passports record nationality but omit ethnicity, even though ethnicity is recognised in national statistics and equality monitoring. We believe that ethnicity is a meaningful part of identity and heritage, and that including it on passports would acknowledge the diverse backgrounds of British citizens and provide a more transparent reflection of identity. This would not change equal citizenship rights.
