We call on the Government to introduce a mandatory training and certificate scheme, where anyone handling and selling food must undergo training and obtain a food hygiene and allergy awareness certificate.
Currently there is no such legal requirement for people handling and selling food and we think this should change. In 2022, the FSA estimated that there were around 2.4 million cases of food borne illness annually. We think this could be drastically reduced with mandatory food hygiene and allergy awareness training.
