Drivers should be fined instead of given points for exceeding any speed limit by up to 5mph, with the amount being similar to charges for parking violations.

Most road users understand speed limits. But we feel getting points which can lead to the loss of a driving licence is outdated and inappropriate given the multiplicity of modern road hazards. Speed limits often change and we consider signage to be inconsistent and inadequate in towns and on motorways especially. Many drivers constantly avoid modern hazards, especially cyclists, potholes and worn-out white lines. We feel modern technology is ruthlessly good, so its use should be ruthlessly fair too.
