We call on the government to introduce a mandatory one-day-a-week community volunteering programme for people seeking work - building skills, providing fulfilment, and strengthening local communities for the benefit of individuals and the places they live.
Unemployment can be isolating and demoralising. People seeking work often want to contribute but lack the opportunity. A weekly community volunteering programme gives them purpose, structure, and real skills - while improving local areas. It builds confidence, fosters community belonging, and strengthens CVs. This isn't about obligation - it's about empowerment. The benefits last long after someone returns to work, for both the individual and the community they've invested in.
