Milestones

Require elected public office holders, including MPs, councillors and mayors, to clearly state their official role in their social media profile name.

We believe people should be able to identify when they are interacting with an elected representative rather than a private individual. Elected officials can influence public debate, particularly on local and national issues. Without clear identification, their comments may be mistaken for those of ordinary members of the public. We think greater transparency would support openness, accountability and public trust. We believe this could be achieved through guidance or a code of conduct.
