Allow UK employees to make additional voluntary student loan repayments through salary sacrifice, with employers able to pay the sacrificed amount directly to the Student Loans Company via payroll.
Many graduates make mandatory student loan repayments through payroll, but any extra voluntary repayments must come from take-home pay after tax and National Insurance. We believe this gives little incentive to repay faster, and we think allowing salary sacrifice for voluntary repayments would help workers reduce student debt, improve financial wellbeing and give employers a practical graduate support benefit. This could include safeguards such as annual caps and minimum wage protections.
