We ask for a review of the current blanket ban on personal imports of meat and dairy from the EU, to allow products that we think are low risk such as sealed, pasteurised or fully cooked items.
Current rules treat all meat and dairy products the same, regardless of processing or packaging. However, we think that products such as pasteurised dairy, cooked meat and industrially sealed goods carry very low risk. In our opinion, this would not be a reduction in biosecurity protections, but would make them proportionate and evidence-based, in line with modern food safety standards and existing commercial trade controls.
