Legislate to require police to retain body-worn video footage linked to recorded police-public interactions for 6 months, with extension where a complaint, subject access request, disclosure request, safeguarding process or investigation arises.
Body-worn video linked to police-public incidents can be deleted before people reasonably know it may be relevant. It may later be needed for complaints, subject access or disclosure requests, safeguarding, investigations or review of police conduct. A 6-month period, set by law or statutory guidance, would reduce premature deletion while still allowing routine, unrelated footage to be deleted sooner.
