We want the Government to make water safety education mandatory in secondary as well as primary schools and work for improvements in warning signage at rivers, lakes, reservoir's and beaches.
Every summer children and teenagers drown in open waters. Many do not understand cold-water shock, hidden currents or the dangers of jumping into lakes and rivers. All schools should teach water safety yearly and councils should be made to install clearer emergency and warning signs at all public water areas. We need a summer and water awareness campaign which includes: what to do if a friend/person is drowning, CPR and basic rescue awareness.
