We want to create a statutory right for families of homicide victims to obtain physical/digital copies of CCTV footage featuring their deceased loved one. This should be known as James’s Law, so Police aren’t stopped from providing copies to families by citing third-party ownership/data protection.

Families of homicide victims are sometimes permitted to view CCTV of their loved ones, but police can refuse to provide copies for families to keep, claiming the footage belongs to a third party. Our strong view it that viewing footage in a controlled police room is not enough. Families can feel trapped by red tape and denied the right to retain these final records. We demand a legal framework compelling police to provide families with copies of this CCTV, bypassing third-party ownership and copyright reasons.
