To reduce emissions, fuel consumption, accidents and maintenance, we call for a limit on motorway speeds for all vehicles to 60mph. Fuel consumption and C02 emissions varies strongly with speed so we think this is more than proportional.
Vehicle emissions contribute strongly to climate change and action is required to limit the damage. No one can ignore the growing frequency of extreme weather and yet we believe that little strong action is taken unilaterally. In our view fuel spending sends UK money abroad and a reducing speed can also save fuel. This change may feel like inconsequential government intervention but, like seatbelts, we think it’s the right thing to do. Slower speeds can also mean less car maintenance is needed.
