The single-carriageway sections of the A1 in the north of England are an active public safety crisis. Sudden bottlenecks and dangerous flat junctions cause frequent fatal collisions and serious injuries. When crashes gridlock the A1, heavy freight and tourist traffic flood inadequate local village roads, gridlocking rural communities. We need a permanent safety guarantee: a commitment to continuous dualling and immediate, interim safety upgrades to protect lives and the economy.
