We call on the UK Government to introduce legislation requiring all elected councillors and politicians, at both local and national level, to undergo an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check before taking office and at regular intervals throughout their term.

Those elected to represent the public are entrusted with significant responsibility. They make decisions affecting children, vulnerable adults, public finances, education, social care, housing, policing and many other essential services. People working in schools, healthcare, social care, emergency services and countless other professions are often required to undergo DBS checks because of the trust placed in them. The public should have confidence that those making decisions.
