Require all schools to have trained staff available to administer prescribed emergency glucagon to pupils with Type 1 diabetes experiencing severe hypoglycaemia.
Children with Type 1 diabetes can become unconscious within minutes if severe hypoglycaemia is not treated. Although many pupils have prescribed emergency glucagon in school, staff are not legally required to administer it. A child’s chance of receiving life-saving treatment should not depend on whether a member of staff is willing to help. Every school should have trained staff with a legal duty to administer prescribed emergency glucagon.
