Review laws relating to inheritance to consider what could be done to better protect adult survivors of childhood abuse. Survivors may feel forced to maintain contact with abusive parents to avoid losing an inheritance, which we believe may lead to wealth to be used as coercion.
A review should assess impact on survivors of such abuse, current protections, consult experts and survivors and explore possible reforms to prevent inheritance being used to coerce someone set to inherit. We think possible changes to be considered could include greater court discretion where disinheritance is linked to abuse. In our view survivors should not have to choose between wellbeing and financial security.
