Milestones

Amend planning legislation so relevant NHS healthcare bodies are statutory consultees on major housing developments and Local Plans where development is likely to have a significant impact on healthcare services.

Major housing developments increase demand on GP practices, hospitals, mental health, community health and ambulance services, yet consultation with NHS organisations is not consistently required before planning decisions are made. The Government should require local planning authorities to consult relevant NHS bodies on major planning applications and Local Plans, and consider their assessment of healthcare capacity and infrastructure needs before making decisions. This would help ensure healthcare infrastructure is planned alongside housing growth and protect access to NHS services for existing and future residents.
