Milestones

Clarify how Grey Belt policy should apply to land adjoining Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs), ancient woodland and other nationally protected nature sites to ensure consistent application.

The Government said Grey Belt policy would prioritise poor-quality Green Belt land while protecting genuine nature sites. We are concerned it is being applied inconsistently, with undeveloped countryside adjoining Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs), ancient woodland and other nationally protected habitats being classified as Grey Belt despite the National Planning Policy Framework. The Government should clarify the policy and issue guidance to ensure consistent application.
