Change the requirement to pay inheritance tax from before probate is granted to after probate has been granted to enable all types of assets to be used to raise the tax due. We want this requirement to apply to any similar tax that may replace inheritance tax in the future.

Inheritance tax is normally paid before probate is granted, but most assets cannot be accessed until probate has been granted. We believe this causes unnecessary stress at a difficult time. With ever-increasing house prices and pensions being included in the value of a person’s estate in April 2027, more people may be caught in the Inheritance Tax web and face this problem. We want the Government to equalise interest on unpaid and overpaid tax. 6 months after death, unpaid inheritance tax is subject to a 7.75% interest rate, yet there is only a 2.75% interest rate when refunding overpayments.
