We call on the UK Government to amend electoral law and extend voting rights in all general and local elections in England and Northern Ireland to anyone who is legally residing there and paying tax.
We believe “taxation without representation” is wrong in principle: people who pay taxes and are affected by decisions should be able to vote to shape national decisions. “Lawful residents” means people who are legally entitled to reside in the UK and who can obtain government-issued identification (e.g., a NI number, a driving licence, or similar).
